Fishing the Bulkley River at Telkwa, British Columbia, Canada

Things To Do

The village of Telkwa is located nearly 15 km or 9 miles southeast of Smithers where world renowned Bulkley and Telkwa Rivers meet. You can fish on either side of the Bulkley River. A great spot for fishing can be found along the bank on the opposite side of the river from Highway 16. You need to cross the Bulkley River via a single lane traffic bridge to where you can find a parking spot. From there you cross a train bridge on foot.

In addition to steelhead, you'll find all five species of Pacific salmon in the Bulkley River. Spring salmon (also known as king or chinook) along with Coho (silver), sockeye and pink salmon.

You need to have a fishing license and be sure to have it on you at all times when fishing. Conservation Services do periodic checks every so often.

You can buy a fishing license at Oscar's Source for Adventure or Outdoor Essentials on Main Street in Smithers. Licenses cost anywhere from $11 to $31 depending on how many days you plan to fish. Licenses for people under 16 are free. You must purchase a salmon stamp if you plan to keep salmon or fish where salmon are, such as the Bulkley River.

There are numerous lakes and rivers in and around the valley a person can fish. If you're not sure, just ask anyone around. They will gladly give you some suggestions or point you in the right direction.

Canada's fishing resources are perfect for all types of fishermen from beginners to seasoned anglers and world-class fishermen. This is one of the main reasons why Canada is one of the most popular fishing tourism destinations in the world. Over 3 million tourists visit Canada every year to fish.
