Witset Canyon, formerly known as Moricetown Canyon, is situated approximately 24 minutes west of Smithers, BC along Highway 16.
Tourists from around the world stop to watch the local Wet'suwet'en First Nations people fish for salmon, as the fish make their way up the Bulkley River and up over the falls. With ropes tied around their waists, the locals stand close to the edge using pole nets to capture the salmon. Years ago they used gaffs.
Things changed since then. Speaking of change, so has the size of the salmon. One time salmon were so large you could barely fit them in a bathtub without their heads and tails sticking out. The salmon are not so big any more. If you are looking for fresh salmon, you can buy some from the locals right here at the canyon.
Sometimes you can find Tony's Takeaway setup in the parking area. Fresh bannock and Sasquatch Poutine are just some of what he makes for you. If you have a Facebook account, you will find Tony's Takeaway on there. Get your photo taken with Tony Naziel and he will share it. (FB link)
Just up the highway you will find a gasbar and convenience store in the village that also sells Chester's Fried Chicken.
👉There have been a number of Bigfoot sightings in Witset and area. Going as far back as the 1800's and quite possibly even earlier, as has been recorded in the Kuldo. The creatures have always been around and were something to be feared. Most encounters happen by accident along a road or by a water source. They have been seen around homes in rural areas. In 1961, a couple sitting at breakfast watched an 8-foot Bigfoot walk across the field and road. This was reported to John Green. Bigfoot have also been seen along the Telkwa High Road. Six years ago, the village was shaken to the core one morning by the frightening sounds of something howling and screaming. It was recorded and went viral on the internet.
👉In the early 1900's, the timber wolves between Witset and Hazelton had a bad reputation for killing black bears while they were hibernating. The wolves would pull the bears out and kill them.
