Jonas Creek Recreation Site, Telkwa, British Columbia, Canada

Things To Do

Jonas Creek Recreation Site is not widely known. Located along the Telkwa River, the drive to the location is absolutely beautiful.

Turn south at the Village of Telkwa, cross the Bulkley River single lane bridge and follow Telkwa Coalmine Road. Keep right at the 1st junction after the pavement ends. Keep left at the second junction (1000 Road). Continue down the Telkwa River Forest Service Road 21.1km, Jonas Creek will be on your left.

It is gravel road most of the way. Some sections could be rough here and there. You may also come upon work crews in the area. Do keep an eye out for oncoming vehicles and watch for moose, deer and bear along the way.

The site operators are the Bulkley Valley Quad Riders Society.

A small 5-unit semi-open forested campsite on the banks of the Telkwa River, supplied with tables and fire-rings and an outhouse. Take care near the river bank, as it is actively eroding.

There are a number of different areas to access the river and it's suitable for swimming.

A very short distance up the road from the recreation site, you will find a nice open area with one picnic table. Room to park large trailers if the other site is full. You'll still be able to access the same area of the river, as a trail leads down the bank where Jonas Creek meets the Telkwa River.

Do be careful as there are bears in the area. There was a Grizzly bear warning posted when we were there last year (2023). Deer sometimes come through the campground area too.

It's a perfect location for a group campout, weekend getaway, family reunion or hunters camp. There are a number of pullouts and trails along the Telkwa Forest Road a person can stop to fish.

The Telkwa River is home to several fish species, including trout and steelhead. Kamloops Rainbow Trout are known for their strength and jumping ability, and can weigh up to 10 pounds. Steelhead (large sea-run trout) are considered elusive and challenging to catch, even for experienced anglers. They are known for their long runs and acrobatic movements.

Chinook and Coho salmon can be found in the river beginning in July through to September. Fishing success is generally fair for salmon. Other sportfish found in the river include Dolly Varden, rainbow trout and whitefish.

The recreation site is a great spot to set up, unload your quads and then go explore the area!

We absolutely loved it out here!
