We were out exploring the far end of McDonnel Lake Road, up in behind Hudson Bay Mountain, Smithers, BC. In fact, we reached as far as we were able to drive. Large boulders stood in our way at the old bridge. So we parked and got out on foot to check things out.
I was on bear patrol as we had seen a fresh pile of grizzly scat in the area. I didn't want a bear to separate us both from the SUV. So I stayed close to the vehicle. Richard walked on down to the bridge to have a look and snap some photos.
From the looks of the tracks I had seen, and judging by the size of the scat I believe the grizzly was a large male. Luckily he stayed away.
On the way out we decided we would check to see what lay beyond a side road we had seen on the way in. We didn't make it too far down the side road before it became clear it would be difficult to continue onwards with the SUV. So we stopped for a break. We would make ourselves some coffee and just take in the sights and sounds.
Richard needed to go to the bathroom. Number two. So I would definitely keep an ear out in case anything was wondering in the vicinity. With a roll of toilet paper in hand, Richard headed for the woods to the right of me. As he made his way over there, I could hear something moving to my left and it sounded like it was going to where Richard was headed.
I wasn't thinking. I should have alerted Richard. I just reached for the air horn and let it off. Poor Richard was still making his way to the trees, deep in his own thoughts. He almost soiled his pants. ~Chuckles~ Whatever it was took off and all was good.
So we had our coffee and spent about an hour in this location before heading back out.
We seen a wolf on the road here one time. We just weren't quick enough to get the camera out. So I concluded that the wolf sighting had been for the two of us alone.
The air horn incident was kind of funny. We chuckle about it from time to time.
