Arkansas - Crater of Diamonds State Park

Things To Do

Upon hearing where we were going, I had envisioned something like a large crater impact site with rocky edges. I must admit I was a tad bit disappointed when I saw a plowed field. None the less, it was enjoyable :)

People travel from all over to visit Murfreesboro, Arkansas to search for diamonds in a 37-acre field of an original volcanic source. Crater of Diamonds is a one-of-a-kind experience.

You can bring your own mining tools as long as they are not battery operated or motor driven, or you can rent tools from the park.

In the visitor center you can view real uncut diamonds, interact with the exhibits and learn about rocks and minerals found at the park.

Since Crater of Diamonds became a park in 1972, over 35,000 diamonds have been found. Including the largest diamond ever to have been unearthed in the US, the 40.23-carat Uncle Sam.

Amentities include walking trails, picnic sites, 47 class AAA campsites (50 AMP/30 AMP/Water/Sewer), 5 walkin tent sites, a gift shop, and Diamond Springs Water Park (Seasonal).

Diamonds can come in all colors, however the three colors found in the park are white, brown and yellow. Park staff provide complimentary identification of rocks and minerals.

Amythest, jasper, garnet, quartz, agate and other rocks and minerals can be found here too.

Washrooms are available in the visitor center.

Ample parking out front. Oh and by the way, thanks to whoever left us a rubber duck on our Jeep :) Richard tells me that's a 'thing' between Jeep owners.

We headed in with our own gear and then selected an area at the far end of the field. Away from anyone else, of course ;)

If you have a bad back, this might not be pleasant for you as it involves a lot of working at ground level.

We spent a couple of hours digging in search of diamonds but didn't find anything this time around. We might come back another time and try our luck again.

Last year someone found a 96 Pt. white diamond on the surface of the ground. You just never know!

Visitors must pay a fee to search for diamonds upon entry.

Adults: $15
Children (ages 6 to 12): $7
Children under 6: free

If you are in the area, we recommend you stop by and check it out. Give it a go. There might just be a diamond with your name all over it!
